Oh, I would love to go to San Francisco this weekend and join ya...and bring some iced TEA to the party to celebrate Africa's credit system, which is probably in better condition than our own at the moment.

I will be celebrating it right here in town - another old fashioned 4th, right out of the pages of a Rockwell painting. A band strikes up about 11 am at the Heritage Park in the Rotary Bandstand! The weekly farmer's market will be going on right beside it...and I even think a few pinko mime's might be performing in the street, but I will have to check.

Later in the day, down at the pier, the kids will participate in a penny hunt..the same one I did when I was a kid, lots of fun to search for copper pennies hidden in the sand...Then at night the firework display on the ocean, which we will view from our backyard.

I've read that the doctor who tried to save Neda is now being sought by the Iranian government, who tried to get Interpol to find him. I've also read that Iran is saying that the killing was a staged hoax designed to inflame the protesters. But, with no news other that what the Iranian government wants told, it's hard to say.

There's a small back room in most medical and dental clinics where anonymous people wait to see their physicians and dentists.

But now like they have started protesting and demanding equal rights like many of the gays are doing, and some anonymous radicals wanna have the right to marry each other like regular men and women with names do. Marriage should be between a man and a woman with real names, not between two lovesick anonymouses. What's this country coming to these days? How goes the cichlid tank? We are thinking of doing one and would like it to be 30 gallons (114 liters, approx). Another 55 gallon (209 liters, approx) is not out of the question. If we do a 30, it will be dwarf cichlids.

Here's what we have now. A 55 with platties, mollies, tetras, a beta, rasboras, danios and Chinese algae eater (not a pleco). There are a few snails who snuck in as eggs on plants- common pond snail and Ram's Horn. Those Rams have to be kept in check. The plants are corkscrew vals, dwarf hair grass and a red tiger lotus.

Here is Alvaro Vargas Llosa's full article which is anti-Zelaya.

http://www.independent.org/newsroom/article.asp?id=2537

"But, unlike most coups in Latin America’s tortuous republican history, Honduras’ deposed President Manuel Zelaya bears the biggest responsibility for his overthrow."

"The fact that the constitutional procedure was subsequently followed by having Congress appoint the head of the legislative body, Roberto Micheletti, as interim president, and that the elections scheduled for November have not been canceled, is not enough to dissipate the cloud of illegitimacy that hangs over the new government. This factor has disarmed Zelaya’s critics in the international community in the face of a well-coordinated campaign led by Chavez to reinstate him and denounce the coup as an oligarchic assault on democracy."

"That said, the international response, seeking to reinstate Zelaya without any mention of his illegal acts, has been highly inadequate. The Organization of American States, led by its secretary-general, Jose Miguel Insulza, has acted like Venezuela’s poodle. At Chavez’s request, Insulza went to Nicaragua, where a summit of the anti-democratic ALBA group became the hemisphere’s political center of gravity following the coup. Insulza and other populist presidents said nothing about Zelaya’s dictatorial conduct leading to last Sunday’s events and simply echoed Venezuela’s self-serving stance. Efforts by other countries, including the United States and many South American governments, to put some nuance into the public statements were neutralized by the spectacle unfolding in Nicaragua, which was widely reported across the Spanish-speaking world. It was sad to see Insulza suddenly remember his organization’s Democratic Inter-American Charter in relation to Honduras—the same rules of democratic conduct that Chavez, Morales, Correa and Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega have violated on numerous occasions while the OAS looked the other way."

"The gravest threat to liberty comes from elected populists who are seeking to subject the institutions of the law to their megalomaniac whims. Given that scenario, the hemisphere’s response to Honduras’ crisis has undermined those who are trying to prevent populism from taking the region back to the times when it was forced to choose between left-wing revolution and military dictatorships."

BRAVO!!!!

But until that time we also believe that those who only live by the plowshare will always be slaves to those who possess the sword."
(Empasis added.)

Recently there were several posts in Faith and Philosophy to the effect that (my paraphrasing) Christians that live by the plowshare must always be slaves to those who possess the sword (ie, those in secular authority). Isn't the whole point of the gun possession movement and their interpretation of the Constitution that an armed citizenry is necessary to protect themselves against a potentially tyrannical government?

Actually, I'm sure of this. A "hung" jury means that no verdict was reached, and the case is dismissed without predjudice and no jeopardy is attached to the defendant.

This is not a "state's rights" issue, this is a Constitutional rights issue. It's related to the concept of "double jeopardy". No double-jeopardy exists when no verdict has been reached by a "hung" jury. A mistrial is declared, and as Dax said, , prosecutors are allowed to present the case again based on some determining factors.

In the US, the prosecutor is free to bring the same charge again, and whether that happens is dependent on the availability of witnesses, strength of evidence and estimation of likelihood to prevail, public opinion, and the cost of prosecution.

Hello again, Anonymous. Yes indeed, it's all true what you have been hearing about the One World Government aka New World Order which is scheduled to take over the planet in early 2012.

What you may not know until this very minute is that this OWG/NWO Consortium/Alliance will be headquartered right here in the New Fool Moon Old Paranoia Files, and unless or until there are some major changes which I don't know about yet, I will in fact be a member of the ruling elite right along with Queen Helice and King Daxulus who are now temporarily housed in their rural Connecticut Castle.

Thanks in large part to the tireless efforts and unlimited financial resources of the *Laufenberg Foundation* (which btw is approx. 1,000 times larger than the Bill Gates Foundation) we are currently nearing the end of the final negotiations which will eventually lead to obtaining the world's largest and most powerful server. What that means to billions of anonymous people like you is that practically all the world's wealthiest economies and all the major banks and financial institutions will be totally controlled by us from right here in the so-called Paranoia Files.

You may have noticed that I am just about the only person who posts here on a regular basis, and for good reason I might add. You see, we have numerous individuals who are preparing to assist in monitoring and operating this entity once it comes online, and they must be properly trained, which means there is little or no time for foolishness or idle posting. Although there are currently no skilled positions open, you might consider applying for one of our post relocation and forum custodial slots once we are in full swing.

The majority of people (about 60%) who had an heart attack during their sleep, did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from deep sleep. If that happens, immediately dissolve 2 aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.

Afterward, phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by and state "I'm having a heart attack" and that you have taken 2 aspirins. Take a seat on a chair or sofa and wait for their arrival and do not lie down.

NOTE: There may be no pain in the chest during an heart attack. There are other symptoms of an heart attack besides pain in the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating, however these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

Save lives... It is important to always have aspirin in the home.

Even at the age I am now, (15) I could never be ready for a baby.
But to be 9 and be pregnant from rape?
Why would she be made to go through pregnancy as well?
Poor child.
It's bad enough that men don't understand the female mind and how their body works.
But a child..?

To be honest, it sucks for her. (N)

Love the teaching company! I have a couple of lectures in the queue.

As far as abiogenesis, I would postulate that life is more flexible than simply relying on organic chemistry. Organic life is our paradigm, it is what we understand and know how to look for, but I would venture that there are other forms of life, not just carbon-based.

And we look at things from our own perspectives as well. Are we just the mites on the ass of something bigger - the Whoville of the universe? Some wisdom recognizes the internal functions of the sun and vibrant functions of the planets and see them as alive as well. I look in the sky and don't wonder "If there is life out there", I see a sky filled with wondrous life. If the sky was completely black, then I suppose I'd start to wonder.

Even the things in our earth that appear "inanimate" are not. That is a misnomer for if we look at them from a different perspective we see them are teaming with atomic level activity.

Philosophers across time have warned us about relying on our limited perception - that we are prisoners in a cave and all we can perceive the shadows on the cave wall, but reality is not that.

Sure, our search for more life like us is a worthy goal and expands our horizons. But we should recognize our place in a Universe filled with life and not think we are somehow special above other things because we perceive ourselves as alive and other things as not. That is probably a foolish and specious thought.

MamaJean, There is an organization called The Innocence Project which works to exonerate innocent, but convicted, prisoners using DNA testing. They've freed over 100 prisoners, some of whom were on death row, and work to get states to change the laws that led to wrongful imprisonment.

The Federal government shouldn't pay retribution for what state governments allowed. I'd bet, though, that many of the exonerated have brought civil suits against the people who wrongly incarcerated them.

If they were made by a reputable US drug company, then I would support this, but when things are manufactured in China, where dangerous chemicals get into the materials used either because of bad manufacturing processes, attempts to make the products cheaper without any regard for human health , because of weak/enforced/nonexistent regulation, or all of the above. Would you like to be smoking lead, gasoline or paint thinner?

This is not cigarette smoke either, so I wonder if the chemicals in the vapor would worth their way deeper into the lung than they would with normal cigarette smoke.

 Posted by Dax:
First, I agree that a munchikin didn't hang himself on the set.

However...
1. How would a crane get on a Hollywood movie set if there was no bird called for in the shot? People don't randomly bring cranes onto Hollywood movie lots and take them to sound stages for fun.

2. There is no telling how many takes were done of the scene, you'd need to read a production log to find out, but Oz was a high budget M-G-M picture, not a poverty row Harry Cohn production. Columbia might not want to spend money on retakes, but Louis B. Mayer wanted it right, especially with major studio releases, so they would have done as manya takes as necessary.

Yes, liuyu, my husband, who is now retired, was successful as an ME without a PhD and he didn't always work within his field of study. When he retired, he was the manager of a group of highly skilled machinists along with physicists (some with PhDs) and EEs. It was a mixed bag of theorists and the people who developed instruments to bring those theories to life. We're not wealthy, but we are comfortable.

You'll do what you'll do, just keep in mind that science is ever-changing. If you quit school now and decide to finish your post-graduate work in, say, five years, you may find that you're obsolete and that you'd have to re-take some of the courses you're taking now.
