The country's Parliament passed the bill despite opposition from the Catholic Church and conservative politicians. Rights advocates hailed the vote, but many hoped the legislation would go further.

Why would the Vatican be involve in Italy legalising Civil unions for gays. All this does is give the same civilrights to gay coupes as hetrosexual couple. For eaxple if there is no will the estate of one patrner goes to his partner. A partner can obtain the same benefits as a husband and wife.

 

I cannot see why the Vatican would oppose this. Even the Pope has said we should not judged gay couples.
