Which one of these two men in fact caused the accident that killed Mrs. Leola Anderson?

The impact event occurred head-on with Mr. Romney driving north on N524. This was not a high speed collision, but unfortunately Mrs. Anderson did not have a seat belt. She struck the front windshield with fatal effect.

Investigation finds an astonishing cover up story. NY Times, Wash Post, Guardian, Boston Globe -- all present closely fit versions of this tale in their archives. Photographs there are mislabeled. Names are incorrect. The initial description of the roadway and the impact are inaccurate. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney asserted in 2007 that the other driver, whom we now know was Bishop Vilnet, was prosecuted.

None of it holds up.

With Chappaquiddick in 1969, a year after this car wreck in France, the basic responsibility for the accident came out the next morning. This Beaulac cover up is astonishing, nothing like the quibbling over bits and pieces that has followed Chappaquiddick. The Beaulac cover up reverses the basics. It was put together by kids, mainly a guy at age 21.

Most people do not have skeletons in their closets. Most people are tempted to lie from time to time, of course. But the most of us understand the risks of this approach and we do not have the means to put together a support team for a major deception.

This Beaulac cover up fails in the details. (Pronounced "beau lah.")

Details from Mr. Romney and his supporters are not consistent with photographic evidence and follow up interviews. A view of the impact site tells us the rest of the story:

-- The cover story has the driver of the other car presented as a "drunk priest" identified by the various missionary sources with the name "Albert Marie, age 46" in 1968 and in 2007 said to be dead.

It was taken as he recovered from his injuries in the hospital at Bazas, up the road from Beaulac. He was driving the Mercedes Benz 180 in this accident. He is not dead, not yet anyway. He was not blamed by anyone in a responsible position for the accident. That blame was invented (as "woven from whole cloth" in legal parlance) by the missionary team.

-- The cover story asserts further that this "drunk priest" was speeding at "120 kph" and swerved out of lane to hit the blameless Mr. Romney. This is the story that was told to the children of Mrs. Anderson all the way back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Here are the two cars after the accident:



This Citroen DS -- driven by Mr. Romney -- had been forced to an abrupt halt. You can see the hole in the front windshield. However this was not a high speed highway collision as the cover story describes. There is not enough structural damage.

Go on the web and you can find photos and video of what happens to a Citroen DS when it is hit hard by another car. The result resembles an airplane crash as the DS disintegrates. At Beaulac the Mercedes was already slowing down in preparation for making the left turn into Rue de la Poste. Mr. Romney also had a second or two to slam on his brakes.

The photo is consistent with an accident in the range of a 60 kph to 80 kph total impact speed. The heavier Mercedes 180 absorbed much of the kinetic energy as it was designed for safety. The Citroen DS was simply flimsy.

-- Initially, Mr. Romney claimed that the accident had occurred on a "mountain road" as the Mercedes failed to negotiate a curve and swerved over to hit him. Local witnesses report it differently.



Beaulac is a tiny place. Mrs. Anderson's death was quite memorable. Note as well that the highway has been upgraded with additions of two full-scale traffic flow separators after this 1968 accident. Mr. Romney's mistake, driving north on N524 into the intersection, would not happen today. The new traffic separators eliminate mistaking the southbound Left Turn lane for a continuation of the single northbound lane.

Anyone can make a driving mistake. Add fatigue into the mix and this type of failure is all too common. However, this business of Team Lying and inventing a "drunk priest" to blame and slandering one of the important figures of French Catholicism over a period of decades must be unique. When Mr. Romney is caught in a flat contradiction or saying something impossible, he says that he does not remember. The big lies of his tale are put in the mouths of imaginary witnesses.

Clearly, from the evidence, Mr. Romney arranged a frat-boy style Team Lying project. A half-dozen people contributed to the effort over the years. Today this cover up continues as the longest running project of Mr. Romney's adult life. He has been getting away with it, even with such an obvious flaw as misidentifying the priest and the impact site.

Nonetheless, facts are stubborn things, as John Adams said defending British soldiers in court after the Boston Massacre, and here the photographic and geographic evidence speaks for itself. One wonders what else could be out there.

Mr. Romney's political stump speech, given over and over, has similar problems with truthfulness. This speech is given in positive, supportive venues where Mr. Romney has no need to lie.

What if Mr. Romney believes that deceiving people makes him stronger? Lying, per se, becomes a tool to have his way with people -- not serving, not loving his neighbor, but dominating them. Mr. Romney has been running for president headlong since 2007 when he restated this "drunk priest" tale and enhanced it with the claims that the "drunk priest" had been prosecuted and was dead.

Amid the analysis of the Beaulac cover up, we are told by a practicing LDS Saint, Mr. Romney may well see himself as an Avenging Angel patterned on the Mormon legend of Orrin Porter Rockwell. A superhero. Blessed with a "007" license to lie out in the world, to deceive anyone in pursuit of his own ends.

None of this is good for American democracy. A robust democracy cannot automatically solve all of our problems. Of course not. We need a mix of communal and individual efforts. We do need honesty and reliable information from our leaders for democracy to thrive. From Mr. Romney, he could give the country a great favor: 'fess up.

So which car was Anderson driving in?

Mrs. Anderson was in the back seat of the Citroen DS. That is a mid-engine design so there was no middle front seat. It is set up for five passengers.

One of our resources looked at the hole in the windshield and guessed her COD as a broken neck.

I think the difference between this and the Kennedy accident is that Romney wasn't under the suspicion of driving drunk and there's really no evidence of negligence on his part.

Mitt Romney drove straight into the oncoming traffic. He entered the southbound Left Turn lane of N524 coming down to the intersection at Rue de la Poste in Beaulac.

When you drive the wrong way on a highway that is negligence.

Under French law an issue would be raised as to whether Mr. Romney's course of action constituted faute dolosive or intentionelle. (Also: faute lourde ou volontaire.) The problem lies with Mr. Romney's failure to veer back to his right, back into his proper driving lane. Evasive action in hazard situations is required under French law, even assuming confusion and ignorance

Instead of taking evasive action when Mr. Romney saw the Mercedes 180 ahead of him, he continued straight ahead and slammed into it head-on. He has said repeatedly that he did not hit the brakes, which in France changes the matter to an intentional crime. One can imagine a "deer in the headlights" panic reaction -- not allowable in court as a defense, only after a trial as a plea for leniency.

French police came to believe that "Il est mort" and no investigation was registered. Until 2012 the French authorities were not aware of the cover up slanders that had been perpetrated against Bishop Jean Vilnet. Calling the bishop "Albert Marie" in more than a dozen media interviews had obscured the content of the scheme. This is a severe slander against the reputation of Bishop Vilnet, who is a historical figure of some consequence.

Until now, Mr. Romney has not been an important figure for Europeans.

We believe that this cover up project is unique. Mr. Romney and his associates avoided a criminal investigation in 1968. He was reported dead. The cover up story followed. This story kept him out of trouble with his family and then was used to deceive the children of Leola Anderson together with the missionary community in France and the LDS church hierarchy.

Now comes a public reckoning.

I take it from your post that France is now investigating the matter.

What kind of public reckoning do you foresee?

Is there a statute of limitations on crime under the Napoleonic code?

Investigations are prepared in a number of way in France.

The one approach we know about focuses on the cover up as it relates to slander and a long-term conspiracy. The SOL for conspiracy is 10 years, typically, in the U.S. France is similar to the U.S. for this type of case, that conspiracy is a felony charge even where the substantives are misdemeanors.

Mr. Romney began this scheme in France. His continuations of the cover up story date severally to 2007 and at least once to 2009. His associates renewed the claims against Bishop Jean Vilnet / "Albert Marie" as recently as 2011. As a guess, Mr. Romney will do well to feign bad memory as this matter resurfaces in 2012.

Romney was a nobody back in 1968. Why would France conduct a coverup?

Romney's friends among the missionary team conducted the cover up. All of it. None of the French officials were involved.

This was played out to the Romney and Anderson families, to donors and members, and to the LDS hierarchy. French police were not involved in any way that we can tell.

No investigation was registered. "Il es mort" was written on Mitt Romney's passport at the time as though from a French coroner. That will remain a mystery apart from a claim from Team Lying that it was written by a local policeman.

Here is why I don't buy the cover-up story.

Firstly, as Stone rightly points out, why would the French police take part in a cover up? Romney was just another guy in '68.

Secondly, the idea that no investigation was carried out because the police thought Romney died at the scene makes no sense either. There's (thought to be) two deaths and the police don't conduct an investigation? Additionally, when Romney is discovered to be alive (presumably at the scene by paramedics) the police then still decide to not to investigate? Why wouldn't they?

The inconsistencies in Romney's tale aren't that big a deal either. Let's not forget that this incident was 44 years ago. In addition, due to his injuries, Romney was in a coma for several days following the crash. Given these two facts, it is hardly surprising he is a little hazy on the details.

Part of the "cover up" appears to be the misidentification of the prelot involved. The names used by Romney was Albert Marie. The name cited by the conspiracy theorists is Jean Felix Albert Marie Vilnet. Given the 44 years between the incident and now, plus the whole coma thing, he's not done a bad job of remembering the name.

In terms of who is to blame for the accident, Romney seems to think the bishop was drunk. If the bishop disagrees, or feels he has been slandered, why no lawsuit? Why can I only find claims that Romney was on the wrong side of the road in peices by conspiracy theorists? Also, where is the evidence Romney was driving in the wrong lane?

Bottom line here, we'll probably never know what happened. It would be handy if the French didn't destroy police records after 10 years. However, there are at least as many holes in the cover up claims as there are in the "official" version of events.

There is one thing we can be certain of - Beaulac and Chappaquiddick are not comparable incidents.

Utter, utter nonesense. The cover up could not happen without participation by the police. One of the drivers involved being dead would not stop an investigation.

As to the idea that no investigation was registered, how do "we" (who is this mysterious "we"?) know? Police records are destroyed in France after 10 years.

-- No one among the French citizens in and around Beaulac, Bazas, and Bordeaux knew about the cover up. It was generated for consumption by the Romney and Anderson families, by other young missionaries, and by LDS hierarchy. All of the targeted people were told the tale face-to-face in the 1968 time frame. If the tale had used the name "Vilnet" then it would have blown up, certainly in the 1980s.

-- The name "Albert Marie" has been used retelling the cover up tale for decades. It was not until the photo of this man in the hospital (above) was circulated in 2012 that we identified him as Bishop Jean-Félix-Albert-Marie Vilnet. A.k.a., "Albert Marie" if you listen to Mitt Romney and his missionary buddies. Bishop Vilnet is now 90 years old. Criminal conspiracy is more the question than going after money or anything that puts stress on Bishop Vilnet.

-- Romney claims personally that he was told that this priest Bishop Jean Vilnet / "Albert Marie" was prosecuted. That is not credible.

-- Romney has relied on his partners to say that the priest was drunk. Reportedly Romney was unconscious. He has never made this specific claim as a witness. In fact, no one from the Mormon group was on site after the wreck to record any such statements. Still, friends of Romney were more than willing in 2007 to relate that local witnesses contributed the "drunk priest" claim -- plainly, the tale has a life of its own.

-- Discovery for the accident site in 2012 went out to Beaulac and to Bazas. People do know of the accident and a few remember Father Vilnet. And in the investigation it turned out that there are also surviving photos of the site from all the way back. The TPT building, the two-story on the northeast corner of the intersection, has been there since the early days of using telephones.

"Facts are stubborn things." Indeed. Particularly where all the big lies are reported as coming from other peoples' mouths and Team Lying stumbles over the basics.

Here's a question that's always good for a laugh in conspiracy theories. Why the cover up? What was there to gain by covering this up?

Romney's evasion in not identifying a source is what forfeits personal credibility. It's one more lie he invents and throws into the soup.

-- The Mormons from the Citroen were transported to Hospital de Bazas by ambulance. From there they were reportedly transported four days later to Paris -- reasonably with a stop in Bordeaux to drop off three people. This is reported to have used a specially leased railroad car or possibly a short-train with a locomotive.

That Citroen in the photo went from 60 kph or 80 kph down to zero velocity in a split second. Everyone was injured. That is what happened in major accidents before air bags got to regular use. Seal belts reduced injuries, but everybody still got hurt. Even in the heavier Mercedes with a first-rate seat belt system, hands and arms went flying as the car was driven backward.

The cover up was created to target the Romney and Anderson families, the other Mormon missionaries in France, and LDS officials. They were all told the "Albert Marie" tale in that first 1968 time frame.

The worst of it in our view is that the Anderson children were told this tale, told face-to-face that their mother had been killed by the fictional "drunk priest." If Mitt Romney apologizes for anything in his lifetime, he should apologize for that. No one was prosecuted and no one was drunk -- this was shameless lying.

If that's how it was written, no Frenchman wrote it, because nobody who ever studied French for a year in high school would write "es" for "est".

It's not been answered, so I'll ask again: What was there to gain by covering this up?

The idea that there was no investigation because western countries are "tolerant" is so fanciful as to be bordering crazy. 1 person was known to be dead, another thought to be dead. I flat don't believe that France does not and did not investigate fatal accidents.

I'll be honest. I think it was just a tragic accident. No-one to blame, in a criminal sense, accidents happen. Maybe those with Romney at the time believed the other driver to be drunk. I suspect no prosecution came because the investigation showed there was no criminal case to answer. The wrong name thing, the fake name is close enough so as to be a genuine error - if you are going to make up a name, why pick 2 of the guy's actual names?

This is another nutjob conspiracy theory that is apparently being used by its believers to smear Romney. The evidence does not support a cover up.

1.) Local police got the impression that the driver had died in the accident. "Il est mort" was reportedly written in the Romney passport. A report is the appropriate police response in that circumstance, not an investigation of the dead man.

2.) "Tragic accident" -- indeed. Candles are lit for the soul of Mrs. Leola Seeley Anderson. She is not forgotten. As her death is within living memory, she will receive prayers.

3.) "Nutjob conspiracy theory" -- no way.

As a practical matter, Romney's Team Lying had to have Bishop Vilnet's full name to select out the "Albert Marie" pseudonym that they applied to him and continued to use over the years. They also found another man with the first names "Albert Marie," who had died, and misled reporters to believe that he had been the Mercedes driver. It's all in the record.

Mr. Romney avoided censure from his father and from the Anderson family and from the LDS hierarchy by inventing the "drunk priest" "Albert Marie" "120 kph" story and moving the accident site to a "curve" on a "mountain road."

He and his team mislabeled this photo (above) of Bishop Vilnet. They claimed to Boston Globe that this was H. Duane Anderson, husband of Leola. Same thing was told to the authors of a Romney biography.

Mr. Romney is a nasty liar. Particularly under pressure.

That's not because a majority of Republicans are "nutjobs." It's not rocket science that their leaders are lying to them. Trump to Romney to Limbaugh to Cheney -- same patterns over and over.

No, Romney was not a nobody. He was the son of a very important American - the Governor of Michigan at the time of the accident.

Having said that, with a Catholic Bishop in the other car, you then have another organisation well able to cover things up, so I doubt we will ever know the truth. But I agree that the photos of the crash damage do not seem consistent with the claim of the Merc driving at 120 kph.

Again, to what end was it covered up? What was the point?

The "He was dead so that's why there wasn't an investigation" just doesn't make sense. Another car involved, so there would have been an investigation to ensure that criminal charges shouldn't be brought against the other driver. Also, whether it said "Il est mort" on his passport or not, once he was established to be alive there would have been an investigation to see if he was at fault and caused the death of Mrs. Anderson.

He avoided censure from the Andersons by creating the "drunk bishop" tale? Firstly, he didn't come up with it, what with being in a coma. Secondly, MR. ANDERSON WAS IN THE FREAKIN' CAR!

Yes, and neither Mr. Romney nor Mr. Anderson had more than a split-second impression of the crash. They went immediately by ambulance to the hospital at Bazas. Neither of them, nor anyone else from the two cars, was in any shape to go around collecting local testimony.

The cover up tale and the several imaginary witnesses of the "drunk priest" tale were invented later on, almost certainly back in Paris. Bishop Jean-Félix-Albert-Marie Vilnet was converted to "Albert Marie." Bishop Vilnet was claimed to have been "drunk." The Mercedes 180 was said specifically to have been going "120 kph." The location was moved to a curve on a "mountain road." The missed Left Turn lane went away.

Mr. Anderson was told this constructed tale, that the fictitious "Albert Marie" was to blame for his wife's death. He told this tale to his children when he returned home to bury his wife, Leola.

Then Mr. Romney followed up with repetition of the same story. Missionaries in France have been told versions of the tale for 40 years.

In 2012 we ID'd the priest from the Salarnier hospital photos and routine dog work. Turned out that this ID could have been discovered at Beaulac or at Bazas simply by asking, as Bishop Vilnet became a significant figure in French Catholicism during the 1980s and 1990s.

Bishop Vilnet was Pope John Paul II's emissary for discussions with Fidel Castro. Possibly the first. His success there led to Bishop Vilnet being one of the top-level group reaching out from the Church directly to Cuba, including Reverend Hans Peter Kolvenbach (Superior General of the Jesuits), Archbishop Fiorenzo Angelini (Pontifical Commission on Health), Bishop Karl Lehmann of Mainz (West German Episcopal Conference), Cardinal Roger Etchegaray (Pontifical Commission on Justice and Peace), Archbishop Adolfo Suárez (Mexican Bishops' Conference), and Mother Teresa of Calcutta. And what "facts" do you base your opinion upon?

So are you saying that the accident Mitt Romney was involved WAS reported by international press back in the 60's? If so, then contrary to what some of FM members are posting Mittens was a big enough character in 68 to interest the paparazzi. It definitely sounds like Romney was already a somebody.

Mitt's father George Romney was the head of AMC 1954--62. In 1963 he was elected Governor of Michigan and served until 1969. After that we was United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. So if the facts alleged by mmoghand are true, there was every reason for those in the Romney camp to cover them up.

How do we know for absolute certain that Romney was unconscious immediately following the accident? Maybe he wasn't, and what if he did actually fake being unconscious, knowing all along that he would be transported away from the scene of a fatal accident which meant he wouldn't have to answer any hard questions when the French police showed up. Il est mort! Il est moron! sounds closer to the truth.

And feigning unconsciousness might also mean that he wouldn't have had to *render any aid* to Mrs. Anderson. Maybe she didn't die immediately. Romney should have at least tried to comfort her and her husband. How do we know he wasn't pretending to be unconscious? We don't for certain do we?

It's all just a little too convenient is what I'm saying. A female passenger in his car ends up dead while he's driving, and here he is claiming he doesn't remember what happened. Sounds more than a little suspicious to me, but what do you expect from a guy like Romney?

Intoxicated on his religion, no doubt distracted from thinking about all those converts to Mormonism while driving around the French countryside. Then making up all this crazy stuff about some poor priest being at fault. Exactly the kind of thing you'd expect from the spoiled immature son of a privileged wealthy American political family. People like that think they can get away with murder because they have a lot of money. He left the scene of a fatal accident in the back of a French ambulance.

Sometimes one wonders what was to be gained by a coverup but sometimes the fact that there was a coverup means it must be continued. And sometimes the coverup is complete enough that a lot of people will not believe it happened. A good liar can make this happen.

I can't imagine why a 21 year old rich boy would lie to his parents and to his church about being at fault in a motor vehicle accident in which a fatality occurred. Everyone knows it is not the nature of wealthy 21 year old boys to evade responsibility for their mishaps, and this is how we know Mitt Romney is telling his god's honest truth about a drunk priest on a mountain road, despite photographic and other evidence that seems to contradict his true story.

Remember: with great wealth and great power comes great honesty and great responsibility. You learned this at your mother's knee, as did we all. The wealthy are too good to lie.

It's not as though his bad driving causing a fatality would reflect badly on his wealthy powerful father and cause considerable awkwardness and embarrassment for the families involved and for the Church of Latter Day Saints which had sent young Elder Romney to France to convert the heathen French to Mormonism.

Ir's obvious that there was no lying and no coverup. 21 year old rich frat boys never lie to save their asses, and neither do church missionaries lie to make themselves look good to their church superiors. It's a laughable impossibility to even entertain the thought.

But there must be a reason for the cover up in the first place. So why cover it up?

Here is why I believe it was a simple, yet tagic, accident:

1) Neither driver involved was prosecuted. The assertion by mmoghand is that the police reported Romney to be dead at the scene, so there wasn't an investigation. Do you really believe that the police would not investigate a fatal accident? Given that another driver was involved, the police would have investigated. Given that it was later determined that Romney had survived, the police would have investigated.

2) The names "Albert Marie" are two of the actual names of the other driver. Close enough for it to be a genuine mistake.

3) For the cover up to work, the police would have to have been involved (see point 1). It is entirely based on the idea that an organisation with absolutely no pressing need to cover it up, covering it up.

4) We are supposed to believe that Romney missed the left turn lane. In the opening post, mmoghand admits the left turn lane did not exist at the time.

Here's what I think happened. Romney was driving one way. The bishop was driving the other way and had pulled to the centre of the road to turn left. The cars collide. Nothing more sinister, a tragic accident.

Helice, being rich does not automatically make one a liar. If Romney was at fault, why was there no investigation? In fact, why was there no prosecution at all, unless it was a pure accident? There was no prosecution. So unless you believe the French police are complicit in the conspiracy, that suggests it was a simple, yet tragic, accident.

As to the "liar" thing. Romney was unconscious at the scene and in a coma for several days. Is it lying if you repeat what you have been told of an event, not knowing that it's a lie?

2) is funny. Jean-Félix-Albert-Marie becomes Jean, never Albert Marie. Obviously these missionary boys had the full name in 1968, from which they extracted "Albert Marie."

3) asserts police involvement. That is flatly impossible as a report was written. Ambassador Shriver visited Mitt Romney in the Bazas hospital. This cover up was initiated for private consumption only -- for the Romney and Anderson families, for the missionary community, and for LDS officials. Politics in the 1990s and heavily in 2007 is where it goes public.

(Btw: Romney claims now that he was in a coma for two days. This claim is not consistent with the photos. He was not in an IC setup. His head was not all that beat up.)

4) is mistaken. Jack puts down his own misperception of the highway layout as a statement from mmoghand.

The southbound Left Turn lane certainly existed in 1968. This turn lane was marked with white lines on the road and a very large curved arrow on the roadway leading from southbound N524 to Rue de la Poste.

What did not exist then were the two concrete traffic separators and a blue-and-white arrow sign that directs northbound traffic to stay in the far right lane. Here is the front of the TPT building as Mr. Anderson would have seen it from the passenger seat of the Citroen:



Here is a very nice image. You can see today's improvements with the two traffic separators and the blue-and-white arrow sign. In 1968 this intersection had nothing but lines on the roadway.



Imagine the truck on the right back a ways, about even with the green bush. The truck is in the northbound lane. That is the lane Mr. Romney started out in, headed toward Bazas.

If the truck slowed to make the acute-angle turn into Rue de la Poste, Mitt Romney would have had no view of the road ahead other than to see the two lanes of southbound N524. All it took was one moment of aggressive driving and he went head-on into that southbound Left Turn lane.

The Mercedes 180 was back there, a car length or two behind the second car on the left. Bishop Vilnet pulled into the Left Turn lane just as Romney entered the intersection. Best guess from the impact damage is that Bishop Vilnet hit his brakes. Romney says he did not -- though he does seem to have tried to pull back to his right. If Romney had hit his brakes, he would have had a very good chance of missing the Mercedes entirely.

Finally, keep in mind that these missionary boys back in Paris were making it up for family and for their own people. They knew nothing about automotive engineering, even with Romney's Dad having run AMC as its CEO.

The claim that the Mercedes was speeding at "120 kph" as attributed to a "truck driver" is as thin as tissue paper. Here is what that type of wreck looks like. The Mercedes 180's engine would have rolled up, absorbing kinetic energy. The Citroen would have gone under the main mass of the Mercedes.



The Citroen would have been crushed structurally in any 120 kph + 60-to-80 kph head-on accident with the heavier Mercedes. The accident depicted in this photo had initial impact at the passenger side headlight. Romney's accident had the driver side headlight hitting about the middle of the Mercedes 180 radiator.

The cover up worked perfectly with the two families. It worked with the missionary community and has been continued there for decades. Worked inside LDS. Worked when Romney ran for governor of Massachusetts. Then in 2007, Mr. Romney supplied willing co-conspirators to mislead the New York Times, Guardian, Washington Post, Boston Globe and the Globe reporters Michael Kranish and Scott Helman who published an extensive biography titled, "The Real Romney." (Helluva title.)

Success begat carelessness.

Took us to get past yet another 2007 flim-flam from Team Lying that ID'd the priest as a dead man, who had born the names Albert Marie. To dig out the real priest, age 90. To find resources and do the begging to get people down to Beaulac and Bazas and other French places. To follow through.

We know about Wall Street. Been there, done that in New York. The name of that game is Liar's Poker. We looked at the "drunk priest" tale and it was too damn perfect. We expected Romney to be a guiltless liar, a sociopath. We expected to find Team Lying as his routine approach to crisis. That's how Wall Street does it. It's a moral plague.

You want to understand the breadth and depth of the mental disorder, what it is that lets Americans take a Mitt Romney as he wants to be taken, read Greenspan's 500 pages of freaking con-job lies first and then Matt Taibbi:

There are a lot of bad things he did that he doesn't remember, so Cons should find him enough like Reagan to vote for him.

Well, if Romney was unconscious and unable to fabricate a story of what happened it seems to me his church and his dad would have been informed of the accident and, since Romney was one of the chosen ones, these entities may have used some tools from their box of lies to fabricate a more likeable story for mass consumption. Given this possibility it could be decided that Romney the candidate is equally in the dark about what actually happened but I would think in this scenario he would have been "made wise" to the actual events if for no other reason than the pride of ownership to the aforementioned entities.

Coverups are not uncommon and lies are very much an acceptable method of operation when the ends justifies the means.

According to Grover Norquist an ability to sign Republican laws into effect is the only qualification Cons should consider. Having a past is certainly a useful tool to those handing the guy a pen and saying sign here.

If one wants to argue that a benevolent God exists, they first have to explain why Grover Norquist is alive in the world.

Blackmail is cheaper than bribes and it is reliable. One question we had was how the Republicans' Big Money people could have missed this scam. Maybe they didn't.

What *you* ought to be asking, Jack, is why didn't that drunken "Albert-Marie" get arrested and prosecuted! After all, he was there at the scene when the French police arrived. To get at the real truth, Jack, you have to find out why *everybody* was lying *except* for Mitt Romney. There is a conspiracy here, all right... the entire Catholic Church and the entire French police force and French government banding together to protect a drunken killer priest and do... well... actually, they did nothing to Mitt Romney. That must be part of the conspiracy as well, perhaps they always knew he would run for American President and deliberately held this conspiracy back to ripen in its own time. The Illuminati are known for their incredible subtleness and patience, aren't they Jack?

Mitt Romney did not, *could* not have lied. His character as a young, wealthy heir to a fortune and 21 year old Elder of the Church of Latter Day Saints doesn't allow for this. It is impossible that Mitt Romney would have lied to protect himself from possible prosecution or possible recriminations from his family and his church. It flies in the face of logic itself.

In this case, every single person involved lied EXCEPT for Mitt Romney, and that's the proof that he is innocent of reckless driving in a foreign country resulting in fatality.

I think I've proved my point beyond the shadow of a doubt.

So, Mittens was "famous" enough to warrant a Boston Globe story? Apparently he was a "somebody".



Jack these are opinions you hold, but they are not convincing facts.

Helice, I am not saying Romney *could* not have lied. Of course he could. I'm saying that the fact that he is rich is not evidence he is lying. Do you believe that rich people are simply incapable of telling the truth? Just for my reference, in case my circumstances change, at what level does my bank balance have to be for me to suddenly be incapable of being truthful?

You do make a good point about why the bishop was not arrested. That is why I believe it was just an accident, nothing more. Let me ask you this: If Romney was driving recklessly, causing the accident and killing that woman, why was HE not prosectued? The whole "the police thought he was dead so didn't investigate" is barely worth the effort typing. The police would have known he was alive when the paramedics didn't took him to hospital rather than the morgue.



The Boston Globe ran the story in 2007. This shows he was important enough for it to be news in 2007, not 1968.

Items 1 and 3 on my list are not opinions. They are facts. Neither driver was prosecuted. Therefore, the police didn't think there was a case to answer. In order for there to have been a cover up, the police would have to be involved. Why would the police have helped to cover it up? They had no pressing need to.

To what end would the mormons have covered it up? Why would the French police have helped? These questions are not being answered.

This fellow Jack willfully refuses to understand the difference between an accident report and a criminal investigation. An accident report is prepared mostly from observations made at the scene of the accident. This June 16th 1968 accident was about as straightforward a collision as they come. The post office was right there, so the crash was audible to several people and assistance was on the way within the minute. We know exactly where the accident happened.

There was no criminal investigation. There was no possibility of official involvement in a cover up.

Similarly, Jack refuses to understand the difference between a private cover up and a public cover up. Since -- to stress the point -- no criminal charges were filed, there was minimal press coverage and what there was of that was focused to the passing of Mrs. Leola Anderson. A request for prayers for her at the parish was about the most of it.

This tale of the "drunk priest" "Albert Marie" was hatched in 1968 as a private cover up. Mr. H. Duane Anderson was sucked in along with the other Paris-based missionaries. The Romney family was sucked in. LDS officials were sucked in and in 1968 and subsequent years they all as much as patted Golden Boy on his head and praised him for surviving the viscous onslaught by that nasty Catholic drunkard. (Suffering as a missionary is a big deal.)

Lying for selfish aims is of Satan, a poison in the soul. Think this fellow Jack ever heard of that?

French police prepared an accident report. There was no alcohol involved -- that would have triggered a criminal investigation automatically -- and no one was speeding. Look at the photo of the cars after the wreck and it is easy to do an estimate for the total impact speed.

The Citroen DS was flimsy by 1960s standards:



There's no unibody-style protection for passengers. The gas tanks also tended to explode on side or rear impact collisions. Still, for many people this is an impressive design because of the flowing lines.



Remove the Goddess's wheels and she's quite pretty.

All of the DS's were 5-seaters. That is because the engine was set well back in the car. That is called a mid-engine design. Two-people only in the front.



The funny looking black rectangular/boxy-looking thing behind the spare tire is a radiator cowling. Inside the black plastic there is a normal liquid-cooling automotive radiator. Air is pumped by a fan through this radiator, cooling the liquid, and keeping the engine from overheating. As a guess, and apart from safety concerns, this is not a car that you would want to drive during the summer in Arizona or Nevada.

Given that there was one confirmed and one suspected fatality in this accident, there would have been an investigation. Not just a report, but a full investigation.

We know hear that the Romney family, the Anderson family and the LDS church was all sucked into this cover up. If that is the case, then who orchestrated the cover up?

Finally, and I ask this purely for the look of the thing (I've asked it several times before and no-one has answered). TO WHAT END WAS THERE A COVER UP?

No-one is willing to answer why there was a cover up, or even who covered it up.

To protect the reputation of George Romney, who was at the time the governor of Michigan and would, the following year become the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Lyndon Johnson. Romney may have had Presidential ambitions. It is also possible that the Mormon church was involved since George Romney was Mormon. the church and Romney's political machine would have covered up the collision to save face all around.

Helice reminded me of the "coverup" or at least agreement to never discuss the "accident" that occurred when a car driven by a young Laura Bush struck and killed her then boyfriend.

Ted Kennedy waited until he could sober up and think up a cover for Mary Jo Kopechne's death.

The Catholic church covered up...well, you know what they covered up and for how long.

America has a long tradition of covering up unsavory actions taken by their leaders and the families thereof.

You've got us, Jack. We're all stumped why a 21-year old would lie to his parents and to his boss and to his church about being at fault in a motor vehicle accident that kills his boss's wife. Everyone knows it is not the nature of 21-year olds to evade responsibility. No Bush or Kennedy ever did anything like that. This implies that someone other than those three groups orchestrated the whole thing. It also implies it wasn't to protect Romney's father, since it was only meant to explain what happened to Anderson's kids or something.

Now, the conspiracy theorists have been called out and suddenly Romney orchestrated the whole thing (easy to do in a coma) and it was to protect himself/his father.

Change your theory as often as you post.

Here's a question: Have you EVER heard of a fatal accident not being fully investigated? Yet we must believe this one wasn't. Really? So the police must be in on the cover up, right? Because an investigation would blow open the cover up. So the police are involved, but how? Why would they care? They wouldn't know who this 21-year-old Romney kid is, and probably wouldn't know who his father is. Why would they help cover it up?

In fact, Mitt's father was leading in polls for the Republican nomination for much of the country. Mitt was very close to his father George, who was then Michigan governor.

George Romney eventually was said to have ruined his own campaign by saying that his support for the Vietnam war was due to "brainwashing" by the military. That description seems spot on today, for those of us who have worked at the Pentagon and sat through Pentagon briefings over the years.

Corporate press tarred George Romney in 1968 about the same way that Howard Dean was tarred for "The Scream" with a dishonest sound track in 2004. The Pentagon was then and remains now among the very best at this Team Lying approach to management.

Mitt Romney's choice to lie about the Beaulac car wreck is more tragic than George Romney's honest appraisal of military briefings. Mitt may well have gone to The Dark Side in a panic because he had been insulated from day to day problems, from personal crisis.

Mitt Romney experienced wealth, Mormon society from its top level, and hereditary privilege. For example, when he raised a gang, assaulted and beat up John Lauber and cut off his hair in what today would be called a "hate crime", there was no investigation, and Romney was not punished.

Later on Bain cut the edges and screwed investors as well as lenders, and of course the workers. No punishment to speak of.

By omitting and changing details of the story of the fatal accident, Mitt avoided red-ink tabloid headlines "Candidate's Son Kills Woman." That was in 1968. In the 1990's and in 2007 he had to keep that version of the story consistent, therefore the continuous lies. We know this now because of those stubborn things, those things that are called stone cold facts:



Thanks to the Occupy network and many other researchers, we know that the man in this photo is not "Albert Marie", and we know he was not "drunk" and he was not "speeding" or going anywhere near that "120 kph" from Mitt's Lying conspiracy.

This Romney cover up began privately in 1968, fooled everyone in the Mormon community for decades, and reached full force publicly, including conspiratorial assistance, in 2007. It's all in the record at major newspapers and it's in "The Real Romney" by Kranish and Holman.

And this is an American tragedy whatever one might think of Mr. Romney's current politics and lifelong ambition to be president.

Look to the police investigation in this one. Either there was one, and Romney has no case to answer. Or there wasn't, in which case the police were involved in the cover up. And if they were, why were they?

Romney and his wife had attended the Winter Olympics, and Romney and wife were sitting directly behind Sky Blu, and Mitt told Sky Blu several times to straighten his seat up, and when he refused, Romney allegedly grabbed the rapper. Mrs Romney screamed, and the Canadian police came on board and escorted the rapper off the plane.

Sky Blu wrote a song about the incident...you can sing along if you like.

We kinda like how this new Occupy-driven process is working. Put together otherwise under-utilized resources to investigate Team Lying criminal schemes. Hold on a minute. This was a "private cover-up" not meant for public consumption. So you can forget the whole "protecting his father/church" angle. Those suggest it was a cover up to hide it from the public. A direct contradiction to what you've previously stated.

You've also said the Romney was "dragged into" the cover up. Which suggests he isn't the instigator. So it wasn't for his personal benefit.

The contradictions mount up and the holes in the conspiracy theory mount up. A conspiracy theory based on facts brought forward by the Occupy Movement (seemingly). Hardly objective. We know the prelate was Bishop Jean-Felix-Albert-Marie Vilnet because... The Occupy Movement say so! Where is the evidence?

Let's recap. We have a fatal accident that is not investigated by the police, but the police aren't involved in the cover up. Mitt Romney created this "drunk priest" "Albert Marie, age 46" "mountain road" tale shortly after returning to Paris from Bazas in 1968. Overall, this is Team Lying with a 44 year time span.

There is one question at issue. Only one:



Plainly Jack finds it difficult to support Mr. Romney's "drunk priest" "Albert Marie" tale. His problem is that evidence makes it indefensible to try to put the blame for killing Mrs. Anderson on Bishop Jean Vilnet -- that other driver in 1968 at that intersection in Beaulac.

I'm not suggesting that at all. What I'm saying is that when looking for evidence against Romney, you could probably find less biased stuff than what the Occupy Movement produces. Let's face it, if I brought forward evidence from the Tea Party to support Romney, you wouldn't blindly accept it, would you?



So, Romney created the cover up. A private one remember, so it was only to save face with Anderson. Not to protect against prosecution or to save his father or his church from embaressment. Those would be "public" cover ups. So he comes up with this "drunk priest" tale. But hang on, Anderson was in the car. Surely he saw the other car, waiting patiently at the junction? Maybe he was looking out of the side window.

Anyway, he buys Romney's tale. But he doesn't press charges. One way or another, he's got in touch with the police and said he doesn't want to press charges. At which point, French police either say "Are you sure Mr. Anderson? We was drunk and killed your wife!" or "What are you talking about Mr. Anderson? That guy wasn't drunk" (in French, obviously). If it is the latter of the two, I rather fancy it would cause tension within the Church of Latter Day Saints. Unless we are to believe that the church was more important to Mr. Anderson than his wife, so he goes along with the lie anyway. I don't think I could do that. I don't think I could spend the last 46 years of my life wilfully protecting the man who killed my wife.

Of course, maybe the police did say "Are you sure Mr. Anderson? We was drunk and killed your wife!", even though they knew the priest wasn't drunk. Which brings us right back to the police being involved in the cover up.

Have you ever been in a serious motor vehicle accident, Jack?

I have.

I was struck head on by an elderly alcoholic kidney dialysis patient coming home from hospital dialysis with a flask in his hand. Gee, that even trumps "drunken priest", doesn't it...?

I was thrown through the driver's side window, having first broken it with my face. It's possible that I saw this car make a sudden swerve into my lane, because the impact happened on my left front fender, meaning I must have had a fraction of a moment to swing to the right in a vain attempt to avoid the crash.

But... I have no memory of the impact. When people receive severe blows on the head and lose consciousness, it frequently, even *usually* happens that their short-term memory is completely wiped out, for varying amounts of time. So I have zero memories of experiencing my crash, although I have many overly-clear memories of the hours following my wake-up.

I was driving a small, light-weight car (cheaper than a Citroen, and even more shoddy). My car was almost completely flattened by the larger, heavier car driven by Mr. Kidney. His pinky finger was sprained and bandaged at the scene by paramedics. I was extracted from my little car on a backboard with inflatable plastic balloons surrounding my crushed legs to keep them attached to my body, after 2 hours of waiting for "the jaws of life" to make a large-enough opening in the crushed car to get me out. My crash took place with both cars going approx. 30 miles per hour, and due to the big difference in car masses, mine was totaled and the larger car only needed a little body work.

So, I can witness with at least some authority on what a person experiences when involved in a head-on crash. One experiences unconsciousness, waking confusion, extreme pain from injuries, and severe physical and emotional shock. I know what I do about the elderly man who struck me because that's what the police report said. Being in shock, trapped in the vehicle, and seriously injured, there was no way I could have gotten any such information at the scene. I wouldn't have known the age or gender of the other driver, whether or not he was drunk, or if he was a priest or a kidney dialysis patient.

If Mitt Romney was unconscious at his crash scene, he wouldn't have known any of those details either. Since it's stated he was in a coma for a while, he could only have learned any details of the crash later on after waking up, through other sources than his own memories.

So, if Mitt Romney says he was struck on a mountain road by a drunk middle-aged priest, who told him that? The police? If Vilnet had been drunk, he would have been arrested, yet he was not. So the police could not have told Mitt that the other driver was drunk.

The crash did not happen on a mountain road, as Mitt said. We don't know where that invention came from, but it sounds as though is was intended to imply "It wasn't my fault; the road was steep and curved and dangerous!"

It's clear Mitt got information about the other driver from other sources... he either deliberately or accidentally garbled Vilnet's name. The bit about "being hit by a drunk priest" seems to be a fabrication. Whose fabrication...? We can only speculate. Romney's father would have had a strong interest in preventing scandal attached to his son. The Mormon Church had its reputation to protect. Poor Mitt, all shaken up, may have been in a panic about being blamed for a fatality in a foreign country. There are multiple candidates for the creator of the fabrications told about this incident.

From the photos of the accident location we have seen, it appears that Romney veered into a lane of oncoming traffic, either through misunderstanding of the road markings or from inattention to his driving as he chatted and laughed with his passengers. His small flimsy car struck a heavier oncoming car, and the unfortunate Mrs. Anderson went through the windshield because her seat had no belt, the car being designed for fewer passengers than it was loaded with. As driver, Romney is responsible for allowing an extra passenger in his five-seater who could not wear a safety belt.

Is Mitt Romney a murderer...? No, I don't believe so. But he is most certainly a liar in most details concerning this car crash.

The accident was most likely Mitt Romney's fault though inattention or misunderstanding of the French lane markings. If, as a responsible driver, he had refused to overload his 5-seat car with an extra unbelted passenger, there would have been no fatality, so that poor judgement lies directly on Mitt Romney, the driver.

The false details about the identity of the other driver...? Someone, or perhaps several someones, made up false details to try to shift blame for the fatal accident onto the other driver, hence the lies that he was drunk, and the fake "mountain road", and the garbled name that hindered finding Vilnet later on.

I see three possible candidates for the fabrications intended to shift blame off of young Elder Romney. Mittt himself, in fear and panic. The Mormon Church, already unpopular in France wishing to avoid condemnation. Romney's father, a rich, important man who held high office in the Mormon Church, AND was a Republican candidate for President of the United States in 1968 when this accident happened. Could Romney Sr.'s political ambitions have been at the root of the fabrications meant to shift blame for a fatal accident away from his son?

Remember: Romney was unconscious at the scene of the crash. Any information he got about it came not from his memory, but from other sources. The same for Mr. Anderson. There were multiple parties with excellent reasons to lie about the facts of this incident. The multiple parties could have worked alone or could have colluded on the fabrications.

The only things we know for certain are that Vilnet, misidentified as "Albert Marie", was not drunk and was not in the wrong lane at the point of the crash, and Mitt Romney's car *was* in the wrong lane, and was carrying an extra unbelted passenger.

Although Mitt Romney has given a false version of these events multiple times over the years, at the most recent asking he "couldn't remember" anything about it, just as he was unable to remember the tale his high school friends told about him abusing gay students and in one case assaulting a young man, holding him down, and cutting off his hair because he suspected the other high school student was gay. Romney can't remember it, although the others who participated remember it well.

At least when President Reagan repeatedly said "I don't remember" on the stand when being questioned about supplying terrorists with arms, we can be fairly sure he really didn't remember because he was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease while still in office.

The standard version about Mitt Romney's car accident in France, on June 16th 1968, is a story written by Micheal Paulson, the then religion editor at the Boston Globe, published in both the globe and new york times on 6/24/07. Paulson seems to have compiled the information for the story by telephone, letter, and internet. Julie Chazyn, a recent journalism major graduate from a Florida university, who was living in Paris, did the research in France. this story has a CRUCIAL factual error.

The article states that the accident took place on a "TWO LANE HIGHWAY", then quotes a Sud Quest (French newspaper) article written at the time, that the accident was "in front of the post office on the north side of... Beaulac". the road is two lanes thru the village but becomes THREE LANES -- 2 lanes going south, one lane going north, right at the post office (and appears to have been that way since at least the 50's).

Romney was driving north, in an overloaded car, on an unfamiliar road, at the end of a day of driving, having problems with the sun (note the sun visors turned down in the picture of his car, on June 16th the sun would have in the northwest late in the day) Romney and 2 of his passengers had similar stories, there were driving along, talking among themselves, when suddenly a car appeared in front of them, in their lane, i.e. the lane they were in, and a head collision occurred.

None of their statements address the issue of what lane they were in, the far right lane, the only one Romney should have been in, or if Romney had spazzed out and wound up in the middle, south-bound left turn lane. None of them suggest that they even knew the road became three lanes right at that point.

Since Romney seemed ignorant of the fact that the road became 3 lanes, he made no mention of this fact in any of his interviews.

The most plausible explanation is that Romney, due to fatigue, chatter, and a setting sun in his eyes, became confused and entered the intersection in the middle lane, causing the accident. A fairly understandable accident, which is probably why the French, (with urging from Sargent Shriver) did not pursue criminal charges.

That Romney has continually tried to distort the facts to his favor, to the slander of others, show him to be a megalomaniac, a son of wealth and privilege who believes he is preordained to be someone of importance and has a right to forget the truth.

I wonder if anyone has ever interviewed this Vilnet person concerning the accident. He's now in his late 90's and may or may not remember the details of the accident, but surely he remembers if he was charged with causing the accident or not. I read that the French Police destroy accident records after 10 years. Is that true or just another distortion in this story? What if new evidence surfaces concerning an accident. What do they do then, ignore it because its too much trouble to keep up with so many accident reports?

Sargent Shriver, a friend of George Romney, and the U.S. Ambassador to France in 68, went to the hospital to check on Mitt and report back to Romney Sr. as to his condition, etc. I wonder of the embassy became involved in this incident at some point, and used some type of political influence to put a lid on any further investigation into what actually happened. That is quite possible isn't it? Btw, was LBJ still President when this accident happened?

I don't know what the laws were in France in 1968 concerning drunk driving, but I can't imagine a fatality accident not being investigated if indeed Vilnet was intoxicated as Romney has claimed. Are we to believe neither driver got a ticket and there was no investigation? A woman is killed and they do not investigate and write a police report which tells who is to blame. And what kind of policeman is it who can't tell a dead man from a live one? How hard is that? Must have been the dumbest cop in France, or perhaps writing he is dead on Mitt's passport story never happened.

Oh, almost forgot... did you know that Mitt once had a Michigan State Trooper's uniform when he was in college? This was confirmed by one of his old schoolmates.

The guy said that Mitt got it from his dad's office which was not that hard because the state troopers did security for pop Romney when he was governor or Senator. He recalls that Mitt used to dress up in the uniform and stop his classmates when they were riding around or parked making out with their girlfriends. He had a red light that he stuck on top of his car too.

If it's not one thing popping out then it's another. The 2007 version of the Romney tale appeared to have been woven without due consideration of the photos taken by André Salarnier. Those include the image of Bishop Vilnet and the image of the two cars in the opening post of this thread.

André et Paulette Salarnier were in the first list we have of who went in the Citroen DS with Mr. Romney, the Andersons, and Suzanne Farel.

Later versions have the Salarniers removed and Mr. Bertin Farel added and another missionary David Wood, the same age as Romney.

Now the French newspaper Le Monde did a follow up with the Salarniers where interference by "those close to the candidate" is quoted asking them not to discuss the 1968 accident. Just their presence in the car puts another lie to the 2007 versions of the tale sold to major media.

I was just reading a 2010 article published by Jim Hightower which was titled "Corporations remaking America in their own image" and another one which had the same basic message titled "How corporate money took over Washington--and created the mobs who rant against reform."

The second article can be found online at Hightower's website. He talks about the influence of Super-PAC's which are funded by various billionaires like the Koch Brothers. Hightower calls these entities "secretive money funnels."
He goes on to say that in a nation of 313 million people with an electorate of 217 million, fewer than 100 super-wealthy individuals and corporations have shaped the GOP's political agenda.

Some other useful info to remember between now and election time is who and or what are dumping all this cash into the money funnel...like Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS which has plans to spend upwards of $240 million between now and November on anti-Obama attack ads...the money comes from a few wealthy donors who gave anywhere from 1-10 million each.

Then there's Sheldon Anderson, Newt Gingrich's former sugar daddy, who gave $21.5 million...and Harold Simmons' $5.2 million...Simmons was the main bankroller of the infamous "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" liars who ambushed Vietnam Veteran and Presidential candidate John Kerry in 2004.

Bob Perry gave $4.1 million, and Peter Thiel gave $2.7 million to Ron Paul's "Endorse Liberty" Super-PAC. William Dore' of Dore' Energy [based in Louisiana] dumped $2.25 mil into the Red, White and Blue Super-PAC and jumped on Rick Santorum's bizarre pseudo-religious political campaign wagon.

Foster Friess [Brandywine Fund] reportedly gave $2.25 mil to Santorum's Red, White, and Blue Super-PAC. Friess also donated $100,000 to help defeat Wisconsin governor Scott Walker's recall effort. Hedge Fund billionaire Kenneth Griffith dumped around $2 mil into Mitt Romney's and Karl Rove's Super-PAC.

AFP (Americans for Prosperity) the Super-PAC founded by the Koch Bros. is basically a "Front group for mass-producing front groups" that on the surface look like genuine grass roots orgs but aren't. AFP has an annual budget of $7 million + or - {who knows for certain?] and churns out several useful political propaganda products, including what Hightower calls "hoked-up studies" [fresh from their Think Tank kitchens, and which usually are more tank than think], "alarmist talking points, deceptive attack ads, divisive hate messages, celebrity and religious endorsers, and a menagerie of media stunts."

I would imagine that differing numbers of search results vary based on how the query was typed in, and the physical location of the person making the query. Google maintains multiple servers for their data, and they aren't all updated simultaneously.

Using search terms without quotes can result in hundreds of thousands of irrelevant results, especially with a name like Vilnet's entire series of names.

I really don't think there's any need for paranoia on this matter.

Except that Fool Moon's thread isn't the number one result in Google... this situation is intolerable and must be addressed.

These are organized hackers, maybe compensated or possibly volunteers. They are tasked to support Romney and/or LDS. So far the crew are doing another double-down on the "drunk priest" "Albert Marie" tale.

They (and any call center managers and folks up the chain of command) have no idea that there are relevant photographs or that Andre Salarnier and Bishop Vilnet met in hospital at Bazas. They also have no idea that research has been carried out with the Catholic Church and at Beaulac. Or that there are many more surviving witnesses than just the one elderly Mormon lady they know about, who supported Mitt Romney's story that N524 was a two-lane road.

All those resources and no one checks facts, no one roots out lies.

Fact checking investigators and whistleblowers are the two strongest job descriptions where you need to strengthen a large organization. The four postings at Yahoo Answers, cited above, might seem humorous -- they all but avoid physical evidence.

Closest it gets to fact checking is a claim that "(the) parish in Sireuil (France, up just north of Bordeaux) confirmed that the church's former pastor, now deceased, was Albert Marie." Romney's tale hangs on this one ungrounded assertion.

Simply put, there was no such priest. No Father Albert Marie. Closest with appropriate status with names including Albert and Marie are Albert-Marie Guiot (b. 1896), Albert-Marie Joseph Cyrille de Monléon (b. 1937), and Jean Albert Marie Auguste Bernard (b. 1916.) Not them. No how.

The man in the picture is Bishop Jean Vilnet. Andre Salarnier met him in hospital and talked with him in 1968 at the time the photo of Bishop Vilnet was taken. The Boston Globe article cited extensively in one "Answer" item mislabels this photo as depicting "Duane Anderson," who was the 54-year old husband of the deceased Leola Anderson and who had suffered 8 broken ribs.

Apparently quite an effort was made in 2006 and 2007 to deceive Michael Kranish, Scott Helman and their researchers when "The Real Romney" biography was being written -- partially serialized as that set of articles in the Boston Globe.

Ordinary reporting, done on a deadline, is not up to the challenge for digging out designed Team Lying obfuscations. Globe readers are one thing, but I can't imagine what regular church-going Mormons are going to think of this lying. Maybe 200-proof denial ???

Btw and contrary to more "Answers" disinformation: seat belts were standard equipment on all full-size passenger cars in America and Europe by the early 1960s.

Mercedes went from lap belts to the modern 3-point system in 1968. Citroen introduced 3-point front and rear belts from October 1962. One problem with the DS is that the three rear lap belts could "disappear" back under the seats, lost until someone disassembled the rear seat to dig them out.

As a website owner, I know that there are countless reasons why a page might either be indexed or ignored by search engines, and there is really not very much mystery about it.

When a page is duplicated in content many times on many websites, all of those web pages will likely be removed from the search index because the major search engines consider this to be "SPAM". If you took your last few posts word-for-word and posted the identical content on 70 different websites, the automatic parsing of the search engines' software would label this as either content-spamming or content-theft, and block those pages on all those 70 websites who unknowingly accepted the content spam -- causing harm to 70 websites via cut & paste.

This is a very good reason to not cut & paste like wildfire all over the net -- your posts will disappear and your effort is wasted. Search engines do NOT index identical content posted a great many times. It is dropped. If you are doing this, you are causing the banning of your own posts all by yourself.

Other reasons that some web pages are not indexed are completely independent of what is written on the page... there may be too many advertisements, there may be a plethora of links (which are also viewed as "spammy" by search engines), or the site may contain spyware or malware and be blacklisted for that reason.

To imply that the Romneyphiles have that much control over major search engines like Google and Bing is starting to tilt to paranoia and conspiracy theory. During the 15 years of running Fool Moon, we have had to police these pages constantly for spam, unnecessary links, too many photos linked to from other websites, theft of copyrighted material and word-for-word duplication of content (which I have found happening in *this* thread, by the way)... all these things can work to get a page dumped from an index.

I'm reminded of the story concerning President Lyndon Johnson. Allegedly Johnson was sitting in the oval office one day grumbling about some Republican Senator who was giving him a hard time about some legislation. The President turned to his chief of staff and said, "What we ought to do is a leak a report about how he (the Senator) has been caught having sex with that pet sheep dog of his."

The chief of staff blanched and stuttered, "But...but Mr. President. We can't do that!"

"Why not?"

"Well, because that never happened. He wasn't caught having sex with his sheep dog, or any dog."

Johnson leaned back in his chair, chuckling, "Oh hell, I know that. I just what to enjoy watching him deny it."
