I would like to remind all of you who have a dog that you should use a choke-chain collar only while walking your dog.

I had one very bad experience with this.

Our son had two dogs, both had on choke collars. One day no one was home but me and the two dogs. They were in our back yard playing, and an accident happened.

I heard the dogs making all kinds of terrible sounds, so I looked out the window and they were biting each other!

They would not stop! I did not want to touch them. It seemed like they just did not know what was going on.

I got a good close look and it was one dog getting her paw into the others collar around her neck and it was twisted. I went looking for a tool to cut it off. I knew we had one but could not find it. I knew I was not strong enough to remove the paw from the collar.

I kept trying to stop them and make them sit, but nothing was working for me.

I started to make a noise with the picnic table to alarm them. They did stop finally, but this kept up and finally a neighbor came and yelled do I want her to call the police?

Well I had no idea what else to do so I said OK!

Well, my husband drove up and I yelled to him what was going on, and he jumped over the fence and grabbed the dogs and got the paw out of the others collar. The police did come, glad my husband got home first.

That was something I never want to see happen again to anyone's dog!

Some one told me also they had a dog get caught up on the fence with that kind of chain collar, so please be careful.

We have regular chain collars for ours. They chew the nylon collars off of each other. Paco's was a little too big around and he managed to get his lower jaw hooked between it and his chest. He couldn't get it off his teeth and was freaking the hell out; running around the yard, lurching and jerking to and fro. It was funny and sad at the same time. I undid his collar and cut a few links out.

They sell break away collars. May be worth getting.

I have never been a fan of choke chains. In my opinion, they are cruel to the animal, same with the "training collars" (the kind with the spikes that face inward). The main issue with the choke chain is when a dog panics, as in the case here, they tend to pull away to escape, which in turn causes the chain to tighten around their neck, causing even more panic. Dogs can hang themselves on them, the collar gets caught on something and they have no way to create slack. These days, even for difficult to handle dogs, there are much better (and more efficient) tools than choke chains to utilize & I strongly encourage their use. Choke chains are aweful IMHO.

Harnesses. Our two dummies pull at the leash till they choke themselves and then keep pulling. They figure it out after a while and a few jerks with a stern "NO!", but we're just going to harnesses soon.

Do you watch animal whisperer ?

The stuff he shows on TV does work!

I was doing things like that before he was on.

You should have your own television show instead of him, I guess.

Yes. It would be better than 90% of the shows on tv currently.

And you could sit there and "wonder" " WHAT IS SHE TALKING ABOUT"

And I would tell you , huh ?
And before you knew it I would have you laughing and shaking your head and wondering.

How does he put up with her ?
