FOX:
MAYFIELD, Ky. – A group of Amish men were sent to jail in western Kentucky Thursday for refusing to pay fines for breaking a state highway law that requires their horse-drawn buggies to be marked with orange reflective triangles.
Their beef is that the orange reflective triangles are too flashy and go against their religious vow to live plainly.
Hogwash. They don't want to give on the triangles because they think giving on this will lead to giving on the next thing and the next after that. I can understand that.
I can also understand some basic vehicular safety. You wanna have your religion and ride down the public roads in a horse and carriage? Fine. Power to ya. But don't endanger my life by tooling around in the middle of the night in your little blacked out buggy. The reflectors aren't there to be stylish or braggadocios. They're for safety.
The jail also went so far as to allow them to wear dark dyed jump suits instead of the bright orange that the other inmates get. Okay. Fine. That was nice of them.
However, they also let the men bypass getting mug shots. That's too far. Mug shots are for identification. They identify who's who in the jail, who's who that escapes (as unlikely as it may be for these dudes to bust out over traffic fines and it's not like they would go very far on the lamb if they did, but still) and they provide identification in an arrest record. Mug shotting these guys is not about religion. It's about fair, equal and due process.
