What an historic occasion:
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/09/17/united.states.missile.shield/index.html WASHINGTON (CNN)-- The Obama administration will scrap the controversial missile defense shield program in Eastern Europe, a senior administration official confirmed to CNN Thursday
The comment followed similar statements from officials in Poland and the Czech Republic -- where key elements of the system were to be located -- but was the first confirmation from an American official.
Vice President Joe Biden earlier refused to confirm to CNN that the George W. Bush-era plan was being shelved.
But he did explain the logic of doing so, saying Iran -- a key concern for the United States -- was not a threat.
Phew! It's good to hear Iran isn't a threat. Of course, not all observers share V.P. Biden's sanguine attitude:
"This is bad news for all who care about the US commitment to the transatlantic alliance and the defence of Europe as well as the United States. It represents the appalling appeasement of Russian aggression and a willingness to sacrifice American allies on the altar of political expediency. A deal with the Russians to cancel missile defence installations sends a clear message that even Washington can be intimidated by the Russian bear."- Nile Gardiner in the Telegraph http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/100010237/barack-obama-surrenders-to-russia-on-missile-defence/
But what the heck! Didn't Barack Obama say he was going to "reset" the U.S./Russian relationship? Didn't Hillary Clinton make a special trip to Russia to present her Russian counterpart with a great big red Staples®-like button with some Russian phrase on it that roughly translated into: "Push my button, I'm easy" or some such?
This announcement of Washington's abandonment of its Eastern European allies is rather auspicious, coming as it is on the 70th anniversary of the September 17, 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland.
I recall how George W. Bush was roundly criticized for his own effort to get along with Vladimir Putin back in the day, saying how he had looked into Putin's eyes to get "a sense of his soul." Bush was wrong. However, one might also note Bush held firm against Russian blustering about the missile defense shield which the Polish and Czech governments welcomed with gratitude.
This time around it was Putin who looked into Barack Obama's underwear and didn't find anything.
