I was really impressed by Obama. I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to support him, from some of the stuff I'd seen earlier on Utube. I like his position though on the war, and can only hope that he won't screw things up too much for us on domestic policy. grin

McCain oth stressed our need for experience in the White House, bringing to question why he would choose the running mate that he did. What was he thinking? That Dan Quail was such a good idea for Bush sr., so we need round two of the same? Or someone even worse?

McCain is simply a repeat of the same ol' same old; ready to keep doing things exactly the way they've been done for the past eight years. If we focus enough attention and effort on Iraq, it will justify the false pretenses we went in under in the first place!? No Thanks!

And yet McCain got kudos from some for his Middle East foreign policy.

I don't think Obama is weak on domestic policy and I think his comparison of dollar numbers for spending and taxes held up well against McCain, who never compared numbers if there were no war in Iraq and Afghanistan. As long as those wars continue and as long as Corporate America is given tax breaks, I see no foreseeable antidote for our current financial mess.

Mainly, I thought that Obama kept his cool while McCain ranted on.

Actually, I only half listened after McCain trotted out his very shop-worn and wrong 'joke' about the $3M spent for establishing the current number of black bears as an example of 'pork-barrel' spending.

I didn't hear anything by McCain that would make me more likely to consider him for president so the debate was pretty much just boring. For me, unless Obama blurted out his 'real' intentions I didn't expect him to really gain or lose anything.

I am curious about the shots from the right of the candidates showing McCain refusing to look at Obama. I didn't see any shots from the other side showing Obama's interest, or lack of, in listening to McCain. Maybe I missed those. I take it from the fact McCain wouldn't even look at Obama that he has the same attitude towards Obama, of refusing to engage him, that Obama mentioned we have towards nations we don't agree with. Which means more of the same, which I thought was clearly shown to not be a useful strategy.

There were many two-shots of Obama and McCain together, and Obama did look at McCain, sometimes his look was serious, sometimes he smiled, sometimes he looked annoyed and irritated.

I don't think the debate changed too many minds, and I don't know if there was enough real meat to influence undecided voters.

I watched the debate on PBS because I thought FOX might have their little dancing robot thingie off in the corner of the screen or keep flashing ads for "Fringe" or something.

The presidental debate was shown live on two TV stations here. This is how important American politics is here. I found the debate boring. Where were the jokes? Also as it on the day of our Australian Football Grand Final or World Series why was no candidate asked what football team he supports. It is always ask here if you get it wrong ,as one Leader of the Oppositiuon did last week, it is far more important than your political policies.

In any case I thought it was a draw but I doubt anyone was listening in the end.

McCain won on foreign policy and Obama did well on the economy. This election is about the economy, so, on that point, a tie didn't make any changes to most voters. Maybe we will get a clearer picture on the economy in later debates.

Tobias, if Obama stays on the road he chose the other day, he will be just fine.

He does not need to play any games. Obama was pretty much himself. No attempts to fool us. That gets him big points from independents.

McCain played the political rhetoric game, repeating over and over that "Obama did not get it", that only he was the one with experience and travels around the world. This constant repeating is irritating since he seems to think it is necessary for us "dummies" to get the message.

I thought it was a lukewarm debate and neither candidate won or lost. Although it did seem to sway Tobias towards the light and the truth. wink

Tonight's should be another zinger.... I wonder if McCain will tell his well kept "secret"?

How often has McCain claimed "he knows how to win the war" and "he has a plan how to win the conflict". Why has he not shared the wisdom of his beautiful mind with Bush/Cheney, Gates, the Generals?

Not even his insiders know of his great ideas... It would be great if Obama would insist tonight that he enlighten the people who are still in charge of the mess in the Middle East. It is not patriotic to keep his terrific ideas a secret any longer. (Most likely he will tell us tonight that he also has an unfailing plan to put Wall Street back on track).....

Does he think we all have the same IQ as Barbie Doll and believe his rhetoric?
