Who knows, maybe the school district will replace him permanently with Joe Piculas, the substitute teacher (also Florida) that demonstrated a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears....to inspire his students!
That is a rather apt reminder of what can happen when consequences are applied simply because someone else was offended by something. And, in a related way, points out why "no tolerance" policies in schools are a bad solution for solving a problem. And that infractions need, at some level, to be viewed on an individual basis.
However, back this particular case, even granting for a moment that this teacher may have been trying to "grab the students' attention" you still have to marvel at his lack of cultural and societal awareness. It would be the same as if he pulled down his pants in the classroom and shook his penis at the students. The teacher couldn't get away with explaining, in wide-eyed innocence, "But I was only trying to grab their attention in order to illustrate a wider concept."
Of course, my personal opinion is that this teacher was caught crudely attempting to further his own agenda.
