North Korea celebrated its 60th birthday with a triumphal military parade on Tuesday just as the hermit state appears to be backing away from a disarmament deal, but leader Kim Jong-il failed to appear, Kyodo news reported.
South Korea's largest daily, the Chosun Ilbo, said Kim, 66 and suspected of suffering from chronic illness, collapsed last month, citing a South Korean diplomatic source in Beijing.
Kim's health is one of the most closely guarded secrets in Asia's only communist dynasty, but Kim himself, at a summit with South Korea's president in October 2007, dismissed persistent media speculation that he was ill
ahh.. interesting... reports of death for 5 years AND being ill for a month.. what I find fascinating, is.. IF his death in 2003 is true... what a charade.. gotta give the NKs props for being able to keep such a secret...

First, his not appearing at the birthday celebration squashes talk of look-alikes, as certainly one of them would have been trotted out for this occasion. That would certainly make a lot a sense. One would think this would be precisely the occasion when a "lookalike" would be required to put in an appearance. Second, I saw some video smuggled out of North Korea, purporting to have been taken at great risk with a hidden vid cam. It showed streets in Seoul, and people literally collapsing and dieing on them as others walked by. (Kind of like New York). My memory of all the details is murky, but it was VERY unpleasant stuff if true, and many of the people live like no human beings should. Seoul? I'm guessing you meant to give the capitol of North Korea, but hell, I can't remember the name of the damned place, either, and couldn't spell it even if I did remember.
