Comments like this is what I like about you Dax:

Uncle Ray:

See? See? All that Obsessive Compulsive Bush-Bashing has resulted in a major brain fart. You need a take a couple of aspirin and put your feet up for a while, Dax.

Look Ray Dax is 100% correct. The Russians have done no more than Israel did when it invaded Lebanon. The only differnece here is that Israel humiliated herself against a weaker foe,and Russia kicked some Georgian ass who was armed by the west, true or lie Ray?In that war the whole world wanted that war stopped and America and her friends did everything at the UN to keep the war going.Today Russia is using the same tactics to make sure their goals in Georgia are attained.

What upsets Americans like you and Captain America is that you don't like other powers in the world doing what you do around the world "extracting the urine".It's just been reported that Russsia has rejected the latest UN resolution. The commentaor on Newsnight a nightly news propgramme has just said to David Milliband that the west is powerless to do nothing to stop Russsia and all Mlliband did was waffle on.I think what Milliband was trying to say was that "the west has shot it's bolt" but could not bring himself to say so.

Georgia again shows how arrogant the west is,did the west think that Russia was going to let you get away with allowing Kosov to become a free country seperate from Serbia without paying a heavy price. The silence coming from China is deafening concerning Georgia. After the Olympics I think Russia and China are going to cause a lot more mid night oil to be burnt in Washington and Whitehall.

I don't hate Bush but I am very curious to know what Rove was doing in Georgia just weeks leading up to this conflict? Vacationing?

I know what you mean, CassielA. Sometimes I think it's positively uncanny how you and Dax share the same world view on so many issues.

In fact, I'll be quite interested to see what the NATO Members do, particularly in response to Russian offensive misille movement. I know Poland is feeling a little skittish. Particular when the Vlad the Impaler outright threatened Poland, a NATO member I might add.

Hmmmm. And let us remember that the Kosovo war was a NATO sanctioned thing. And THAT'S the reason Russia invaded Georgia? Because it was pissed off about Kosovo? Again, I'll be curious to see what NATO ends up doing.

I don't necessarily see China jumping in on Russia's side or anyone's side. My thinking is that, beyond the obligatory statement of how all sides need to put down their guns, the Chinese will be content to sit back and watch with amusement.

Ray, NATO ( The West period) is not going to do anything except protest Russia's actions.

Russia knows it has a free hand at this moment and I think it will take part of Georgia if not all of it.

China will cause trouble for us after this Olympics is over, and they may not show support for Russia publicly, I bet privately they do.

Dax and you are smart and very funny I do agree with a lot of what Dax has got to say especially when he tells the truth about the war in Iraq. The only subject we do not agree on is his subject which is really close to his heart,I will say no more.

Ray I agree with a lot of things you say but cannot agree with you when it comes to the war in Iraq and cannot understand how someone as clever as you would support this war in Iraq which has brought America nothing but shame in the eyes of the world, now Russia is taking advantage of America's shame and weakness today when it comes to world affairs like Georgia and Iran. What is America going to do if Russia turns around and says that any attack on Iran it's friend will be considered as an attack on it.

At least we're in good company, since the U.S. is not alone in it's disapproval of Russia's incursion into Georgia. So I guess if this is see as "shame and weakness" it involves the UN and NATO, both on record as disapproving.

Good question. I wonder what Russia will do if they make such a promise, and then Israel proceeds to launch an attack on Iran.

I do not think any war startes with a formal declaration. Any look at the historic records will show that the USA was fighting Japan in places like China long before Pearl Harbour.

Even before 1939,when WW2 stated , the various European powers were fighting since 1937. The declaration of war was the last reponse when Germany call the allies bluff over Poland.

The USA had some volunteers (Flying Tigers) in China and England (Ambulance Corps) long before Pearl Harbor, but they were not there as US soldiers, simply individuals acting out their ideology or mercenaries. I think this is true for Canada, too (ideological volunteers only, though, not mercenaries).

Elena, let me, please, approach this from a slightly different angle. Can either S. Ossetia or Abkhazia survive as independent states?

Obviously, Abkhazia exists as independent state. You know, that Turkey ( a member of NATO) don't allow USA ships enter the Black sea. Turkey made a lot of investment into Abkhazian economy. Abkhazia is like paradise. Maybe it is the most beautiful and comfortable place in the world (I think). Tourism and agriculture are the main branches of their economy. Recently Turkey representative visited Moscow. The special Caucasus Security Council will be created.
As for South Ossetia. I think, She will be exist as a place for Russian military base, formally independent.
Thus, both Abkhazia and South Ossetia will find food for their citizens.
