POTTER VALLEY, Calif. — A Mendocino County woman who was trying to kill mice in her trailer with a gun ended up shooting herself and another person.

The 43-year-old woman pulled out her .44-caliber Magnum revolver after she saw the mice scurrying across the floor of her trailer on Highway 20 in Potter Valley, sheriff's officials said.

But she accidentally dropped the gun, which went off as it struck the floor. The bullet went through the woman's kneecap, bounced off the keys sitting on the belt loop of a 42-year-old man in the trailer and grazed the man's groin before ending up in his coin pocket.

Authorities did not release the shooting victims' names.

The mice escaped the shooting unharmed.

Hunting mice with a gun is fun. They aren't hard to hit. But, if you pull a gun on a mouse and fate makes you drop the gun, thus shooting yourself, then it is time to accept the fact that you are entirely too dumb to have a gun. I bet the mouse is still laughing.

But a .44 Magnum? Good god! Who does she think she is? Dirty Harriet? You hit a mouse with that and the furry little booger would completely disappear in puff of fluff.

Less to clean up then. The .44 was a bit much though. I used a .25 with hollow points. I figured the bullets made up for the .25 part. Oh, and never brag to your wife about hunting mice in the house with a gun. They are seldom amused.

Tends to ventilate the floor a little more than most folks care for, doesn't it?

I suppose if you live in Texas you could just claim you were surveying your living room for oil, and hoping to strike a wildcat.

I believe that in Texas, if a guy catches a mouse in bed with his wife, he can shoot the mouse and no jury would convict.

A little duct tape over the holes and nobody will notice.

I kind of like the little field mice who try to escape our cats' jaws. This may be because Walt Disney always depicted them as kindly, gentle creatures. Disney portayed rats as dispicable, until Ratatouille . Then they were finally recoginized for what they are. I guess--
