"Ever-growing audience"? What do you mean? He reached his peak in the 1990's when he had that cable tv show, which was canceled after ratings dropped off. And that was even before the oxycontin scandal, possesion of many thousands of illegal narcotics for which he advocated harsh punishment for others, but walked away from any retribution himself.
Are you suggesting he is due for *another* peak? Not many celebs get a second shot after losing the public's interest like Limbaugh did. I know his radio show is popular and has a certain demographic nailed down solidly, but that demographic isn't growing. He has all he's going to get, I think.
I have spent a number of hours listening to the man... my father used to be a big fan. I've had plenty of time to think about his show product and make my private judgment about it. I think he's perfectly dreadful, in that laughs-while-he-stabs-babies, Ann Coulter way.
I think his major appeal is to people who hate to think. Example: Global warming, which even George Bush and other biggie Repuplicans own up to the existance of now. Rush told his audience global warming didn't exist, made fun of Al Gore and scientists who talked about it, called them "Chicken Little", ridiculed scientific evidence in a way that made uneducated people think it was all hogwash because they couldn't understand it and Rush sounded funny.
Scientists warn of global warming and give complicated explanations which are hard for some people to understand and which mean that to remedy them we all have to make some sacrifices which will hurt our wallets and maybe our lifestyles.
Ow, ow, owie, that makes our brains hurt, so Rush jumps in and mocks them relentlessly, and tells people they're full of shit and everything is really okay, the raging Liberals just like raising your taxes for the hell of it, there isn't any real global crisis so relax and sneer with me at the Liberals.
That's his tack with pretty much every issue. He looks for the part of it that makes people worried and confused, then he mocks the warnings and the warners and tells people they'll be all right if they just keep listening to him.
These are the people who still think Obama is a secret Muslim. If anyone proudly proclaims themselves to be a "dittohead" (the term for a Rush Limbaugh follower) I don't know if they can be saved.
That's what natural selection is all about.

Positive reinforcement? If somebody is reporting on the news, then the truth should be told, regardless of whether the news seems "positive" or "negative" in the listeners mind. I guess people like to hear what they want to hear, but I prefer to hear the truth, not just news stories utterly skewed to make me feel a certain inflated emotional state. That sounds pretty high minded from someone who gets his news from sources that undoubtedly support his political biases. But there's the truth and then there's the truth. Barrack Obama is on his rock-star tour with the drive-by media panting at his heels with little shivers going up their legs. He's the star of every network newscast with his words being reported as if he's just come down from Mt. Sinai. The last time John McCain was in the Middle East, he got a 10-second blurb on one of the "Big 3" networks. Now you can sniff and snort all day about selective news presentation, but it's Rush Limbaugh who is the one most likely to point out those two "truths" while the Drive-by media are the ones who are the ones who aren't likely to bring the matter up due to the reasons I listed previously. They're in the bag for Obama. It would certainly tend to make their "truth-telling" a wee bit suspect, at least as suspect as you would accuse Rush Limbaugh of being. It is rather sad to see someone like yourself, who would otherwise be considered literate, echoing word for word Rush Limbaugh's......."Drive-by media", "Messiah", "rock-star status", etc...... You may be (or not) smart enough to realize that Obama has, objectively, a very good chance of being president.....Yet, rather than rejoicing that he can attract large audiences in a world tired and disenchanted over the plague of the Bush administration, you would echo Rush's bashing along party lines. If Jim Jones were still around..and a republican, would you join the cult ?

Thank you for the personal insult... Personal insult? Wait. Don't tell me. You thought only YOU (i.e. left-wingers) had the exclusive on that, too, huh? (See Chocolategenii, above) Oh my! This must be a day of real revelation for you. Sort of like discovering the truth about Santa Claus, huh? I interpret it as meaning that my words threatened you in some way, frightened you, or made you feel small and inadequate. Interpret in whatever way makes you feel secure. Whatever gets you through the night, 'salright.
