Ah, the Mosin Nagant M44 is quite the historical rifle. It defended the Soviets in several wars, including WWI and WWII. Precursor to the SKS, Dragunov, RPK, and Ak47. Fine rifle indeed.
For shits and giggles, a nice vid of the Dragunov in action....

I was curious, at this time there are an over abundance of WW2 Russian rifles in the US. The Mosin Nagant 91/30 and M44. I have owned some. They are a stout claibre. 7.62X54 Still very operable. And cheap at this time.
Are these equally available in Russia to buy?
First of all, I want to add though Russian gun becomes worse, many labels are still rather good. Saiga is the best in the world for this price. The price of Saiga is 200 - 650 US$, according to the model. It is not allowed to buy such gun as 7.62 in Russia.

What a tease. Russia produces the nicest Ak-47's in the world but they won't sell them to their civilians?
The 7.62x54 round is essentially a .308 round, which is popular for hunting. In many rifles, the bullets are interchangeable. Can Russian's not get hunting rifles chambered in .308?

Guys, I'm sorry. I was wrong. It is possible to buy 7.62x54 in Russia. "Tigr" and "Vepr". The price is about 1000 US$ (+ 300 US$ for optical devices)..

Is the Tigr the Dragunov SVD? If so that is one helluva nice rifle. The one's I saw listed on the Internet were running close to $3000.
I believe the Vepr is basically an AK-47? From the pics I've seen, thats what it it looks like. Another very nice rifle though.

You know everything.... Prices differ. Models as well. Guns for Russian market are cheaper and the models look like army guns. For USA they produce modified models because of your laws. The quality of steel is the same. Vepr-223 costs 14000 rubles (539 US$) in Russia.

Ha. Hardly. But I do appreciate the firearms Russia has contributed to the world. Check out the video's I posted. Is that what Russian's are able to buy for under $600?
You're correct in that Russian guns that come into the country need to be modified to have several US manufactured parts in them. It's a parts list thing, thanks to the 922r regulation which nobody, ATF included, really understands .

And is the Vepr in Russia an AK variant that civilians are allowed to own?

Yes. First, one must visit psychiatrist and get the paper that he/she is mentally healthy. Second, one has to visit militia (police) and get the permition to gain a gun. After that he/she can buy a smooth-bore gun. After five years of owning it, he/she will be allowed to buy any hunting rifled gun.

So essentially one needs to own a shotgun for five years before they'll be permitted to purchase a rifle?
Now, that said, can Russian civilians own AK-47's. It's not necessarily a hunting rifle, but the 7.62x39 is similar to a .30-30 round and therefore could be used for hunting.
