I think chupacabra means goatsucker in Spanish, after the nightjars...like whipoorwills, chuck-wills-widow, and Common Nighthawk. There is a long-standing belief that nighthawks will fly down into a herd of goats at night and suck the milk from their udders. This eventually morphed into chupacabra stories.
