I need a formula to determine specific gravity at any temperature. The standard temperatures to measure specific gravity are 3.98C / 39.164F or 15.6C / 60F. I'll be taking specific gravity readings of beer, so 15.6C / 60F is the standard I'll be using with a floating glass hydrometer. The hydrometer is calibrated for that temperature and is not adjustable. Original and final specific gravity readings of beer are taken against the specific gravity of pure water being 1.

20°C / 68°F is another standard, but beer hydrometers are usually calibrated for 15.6C / 60F.

Edit Reason: Added another standard.

you would have to know what the specific gravity of water from one temperature to another. and then you could make a preportion problem out of it. i dont know how much you know about math but i could explain it in greater detail if you need me to.

"For every 10 degreesF your measurements will be off by .002-.003. So, if at 80 degrees F (27 C) your brew measures 1.0378, you've got to add .004-.006 points to nknow that the real specific gravity is about 1.043 or wait until your brew cools and take a specfic gravity reading or tsake a small sanple and read it at 60 degreesF'

The New Complete Joy of Home Brewing

In other words, Aint, don't sweat the small stuff--just make your beer.

ρ= ρ0[1+ β(θ0- θ)], where ρ is density at given temperature θ, ρ0 – at temperature θ0, β is a coefficient of expansion (you can calculate it yourself, using data of calibrating).

I wonder if the tongue can tell specific gravity just by tasting. Aint, it would be best to drink the whole lot just to be sure ;\) .
