My friends and I were sitting around the other night watching one of the many 9/11 specials that have been on television lately. He brought up the fact that he had some unique, generally unseen photo's of ground zero following the attack.
When he was living in Pennsylvania, he worked for a fairly large company that installed equipment in emergency vehicles and what not. When the Sept. 11 attacks occured, his company donated a good amount of equipment to the recovery effort. Their driver was one of the few people permitted to take pictures of ground zero. These images are some of the most stunning, most revealing pictures I have seen of that event.
For you dial up users, I apologize for the file sizes. I tried to shrink them down enough that they would be managable, but not so much so you lost much of the detail.

Amazing that after 5 years the emotions that well up like it just happened.
I can remember exactly where I was and who I was with when I heard the news that tower 1 had been hit by a plane. First reports speculated it was an accident. Then I remember the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when the first reports came through that the second tower was hit and that there could be as many as 50,000 people in those buildings.

Ditto.

And ditto. I was at work (in MI at the time) when a customer asked if I'd heard about the plane hitting the first tower, which had occurred about 15 min. prior to our conversation. Although I wasn't the first person to make the official announcement, I was the first person in my office to learn of the tragedy (originally thought to be human error).

Ring, ring, ring, ring Mmmm...hello? How much ammo you got? Huh? Uh, you know we're under attack, right? Thumb tack? Mutha$%#*er! You sleepin?! Was. Turn on FOX! Dude! That planes gonna hit the building. Already did. Terrorists hijacked three planes this morning. Damn! Yeah.

Helice and I were at a Holiday Inn in Buffalo, New York. We were getting up and the tv had news of a plane that had crashed into the WTC. We assumed it was a tragic case of a sick, dead or drunk pilot, but when the second plane hit we knew it was an attack.
We had moved from Manhattan to Connecticut a few years earlier. Our apartment was four miles from ground zero. Both of us had worked in one or the other of the tower buildings.
We went to New York a week after the attack. Although everything was open, there was a strange quiet about even the Broadway area, the entire city was in mourning.
