The United Nations has told Sudan to curb marauding Janjaweed militia or face sanctions, but rights group Human Rights Watch said Wednesday that fresh atrocities has occurred and disproved the Sudanese claims that security was returning to the western region. According to a report, "In many rural areas and small towns in Darfur, government forces and the Janjaweed militias continue to routinely rape and assault women and girls when they leave the periphery of the camps and towns." Janjaweed raped six girls aged 13 to 16 and beat other women at a militia checkpoint in western Darfur in July, it said.

This problem started in February, 2003 when the Janjaweed militias attacked African villagers. It is over a year now, and the government of Sudan hasn't done anything. In fact, human rights group are saying that the government is doing the raping and killing alongside the Janjaweed militias. The United Nations said in a statement from Geneva on that the Janjaweed were still attacking some of the more than one million people displaced by fighting in remote Darfur, and that Sudan had carried out fresh helicopter attacks. Human Rights Watch said Khartoum was absorbing the Janjaweed into its security forces instead of disarming them.

50,000 people is now dead and over 2 million are displaced. The UN has given Sudan a month to disarm the militants otherwise they will face sanctions. The Sudanese are being killed. Genocide is taking place, and the UN thinks sanctions is the answer to solve the problem. This is a real humanitarian crisis. International community, innocent people are getting killed and young girls are being raped. Where are you? Where are your worldwide protest and condemnation of these killings? Come on.....where are your posters, placcards, and banners? Start your worldwide protest against these atrocities.

Err no,we will not protest against what is happening in Sudan i am going on 41 years of age and as long as i can remember people have been killed like this in Africa.

Whats so special about this murder and rape in Sudan.Why is this crisis being blown up like this in the western press is it because there is oil there?

The sudanese goverment should tell the American goverment to go and suck somethig soft when it comes to sactions,we saw Micheal Moores film nobody should ever listen to anything that the American senate has to say when it comes to doing the right thing.

The western world are quick to talk about sactions but never against the right countrys like Israel where sactions and international troops are needed(PDQ)pretty damn quick.

Cassie, the Sudanese government needs to be shown that they cannot treat a section of their population the way they are doing. Yes there will be sanctions and if they don't work then they should be told if they can't guarantee the security and human rights of their people then troops will be brought in to make up their mind for them. Africa needs to try and move into the 21st century not be endlessly bogged down in tribal/religious conflicts.

It just goes to show that the International Community can actually be a lot worse than the United States of America. The International community is supposed to be the one who has no interest and cares more about human rights regardless of what country.
