Well, this seems like as good a place as any to post this as I plan to eventually add some pictures....
The Army, in its infinite wisdom, has decided that I can best serve my country at a new location and so in the next 60 days or so, I will be closing this house down and moving the wife and kids and dogs and cat and maybe even the bird to the great state of Alaska, all in the service of my country.
I am actually planning to make a leirsurely drive of it, throughout the US and through British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon Territory (all along the Alaska-Canada Highway. So, I should have LOTS of stunning pictures to show for it. So far our tentative itinerary includes Carlsbad Caverns NM, Roswell NM, Mt Rushmore, the Devil's Tower, Wind and Jewel Caverns, Yellowstone, and whatever sights we find along the Canadian portion of the AlCan Hwy. I imagine we are gonna make some other diversions as well.
Anyway, I will keep you guys all posted. Likely, I will be asking our Canadian members some pointed questions about crossing the border into Canada and specifically about doing so with pets and food.
Regards,
Lawmage

Greeneyes, I have been looking into it...trust me on that. Fortunately, there is no requirement for a quarantine going from the US into Canada with pets. Just have to have their vet records showing they have up to date shots. I worried about the bird but found out last night on Canadian Customs site that for pet birds (like parakeets) there is no restriction, just need to have the animal inspected at the border.
Now I just have to look at other issues, like taking food across the border and if there is any legal way to carry a handgun into Canada. We plan to camp out some on this trip and I am accustomed to travelling armed. Still, I think two German Shepherds (Alsatians) are as good, or better, at deterring the odd miscreant than a handgun. My male shepherd is 130 lbs (65kg) and is rather protective. My female is smaller, at only 50 lbs (23kg), but is pretty impressive when she takes the urge. They are also trained to guard on command so that helps.
I plan to take LOTS of pictures. I will be posting them here as well.
